Dental Hygiene in Nine Elms

Dental hygienists at Mouth Dental

Professional dental hygiene appointments are important for the maintenance of gum health. After all, healthy and beautiful gums are part of the support foundation teeth for your teeth.

WHY DO I NEED TO SEE THE HYGIENIST?
There are many hidden surfaces around your teeth, especially those hard to reachareas near the gumline, where you may struggle to clean thoroughly with just your daily routine. Any residual debris, also called plaque, left behind after you brush eventually hardens with time becoming a hard limescale- like substance called tartar. Bacteria live on the surfaces of tartar releasing bacterial toxins which irritate your gums and the supporting bone beneath. Your body’s gum and bone response over time to the tartar, if it is not regularly removed, is to retreat away from the tartar. The end result is retreating gum and bone levels also known as gum recession and bone loss, leading to tooth mobility or loss, also known as gum disease.

WHAT IS A HYGIENE APPOINTMENT?
Tartar is not easy to remove at home and will require our hygienists to remove it for you with our ultrasonic and fine hand instruments. Depending on the amount of tartar, you may require multiple visits. Airflow is highly effective for removing stains thoroughly. Staining is a visual concern and not necessarily disease causing. Our hygienists are experts at keeping your fixed retainer clean and free of tartar.

AFTER YOUR HYGIENE APPOINTMENT
Regular maintenance is part of gum disease prevention. Maintenance is typically recommended every 6 months. Although recalls of 3-4 months may be recommended by your dentist, hygienist or Periodontal Specialist if you are at higher risk of gum disease.

Airflow – a revolution in dental cleaning!

Airflow at Mouth Dental is now available for our all our patients to benefit from. It’s pain free delivery truly enhances the hygiene experience but the real benefit lies in its ability to remove deeper staining and harmful bacteria in the biofilm that sticks to the tooth surface.

AirFlow treatment is a pleasant and comfortable oral cleansing therapy using a combination of air, sodium bicarbonate or glycine powder and a gentle jet stream of water to clean the surfaces of your teeth. It takes just one appointment to leave your teeth feeling smooth, clean, polished and ready to smile with confidence.

Stain removals

A firm favourite of those who have unsightly stains on the surface of their teeth. AirFlow uses air, sodium bicarbonate or glycine powder and a gentle jet stream of water to remove surface stains caused by tobacco, food and drink. It is kind to the tooth surface and will significantly improve the brightness and give you a noticeably sparkling fresh healthy mouth in an instant. You will immediately see and feel the difference.

Cleaning sensitive teeth

Those with sensitive teeth who find ultrasonic scaling treatments too uncomfortable often prefer the gentle AirFlow system. Although AirFlow cannot remove hard tartar, it removes plaque biofilm, stains and early calculus deposits – cleaning and polishing in one single procedure.

Frequently asked questions

Who is a dental hygienist?
A dental hygienist is your oral health care partner from plaque and tartar removal to oral hygiene instruction. Our hygienists may also identify dental issues which are revealed after thorough cleaning and will advise you accordingly to see the dentist/ specialist.
Hygienists specialise in helping you prevent gum disease and tooth decay by carrying out scaling and polishing. Hygienists can carry out a prescription given by a dentist/ specialist or treat patients which do not wish to have an initial new patient examination first, also know as direct access. Hygienists will also help educate you so that your oral hygiene regimen is correct to prevent future dental disease. A hygiene appointment is not a dental examination.

Before your hygiene appointment, it is important that you have updated your medical form, we recommend every 6 months. If you have any complex dental restorations or implants, please do not hesitate to mention these prior to starting the cleaning. Our hygienists will reassure you and take your concerns into account when treating you. Your hygienist will perform a hygiene examination and record your gum health before starting the cleaning. Sometimes photos are taken before/ after.

If you experience unbearable sensitivity during hygiene appointment, you can alert the hygienist and you can have the area numbed. Your hygienist will work to remove stains, scale and polish your teeth above and below the gumline and if necessary, apply fluoride varnish to prevent decay and decrease sensitivity. Thereafter you will be advised on a recall period which suits your oral health needs.

Hygienists can carry out a recording of your gum health and attachment level, oral hygiene score and a soft tissue examination. Hygienists perform scaling above and below the gumline and polishing or airflow. They can apply fluoride varnish for decay prevention and sensitivity reduction. They can also apply fissure sealants and take iTero scans of your teeth. Hygienists will also advise you on your own oral hygiene regime. Many hygienists are also therapists. Therapists can carry out examinations, small x-rays, carry out simple fillings on children and adults, and extractions on children.
